The periostracum is the envelope that constitutes the external part of molluscs and brachiopods shell. This layer covers the mineralized parts of the shell.
It can be yellow, brown or black depending on the species. Its color is normally different from the underlying layer to provide a good camouflage. It disappears or slightly lightens upon the animal’s death.
